Buddhism

Types of Buddhism

There are different types of Buddhism. It depends on the country, culture and custom but the teaching (dhamma) is the same.

Buddhism explains a purpose to life, inequality, injustice, and it provides a code of practice, a way of life that leads to true happiness.

Buddha

Buddha is not God. Buddhists pay respect to images of Buddha, not in worship and not to ask for favours. A statue of Buddha reminds us to strive to develop peace and love within ourselves. Bowing to the statue is an expression of gratitude for the teaching.

Buddhism teaches that the solutions to our problems are within ourselves not outside. Buddhists learn, test and use the teaching in their own ways.

Meditation

Meditation plays a crucial role in buddhist practice, helping individuals develop mindfulness, concentration and wisdom.

Karma and rebirth

Buddhists believe that actions have consequences, and good deeds lead to favourable rebirth, while bad deeds lead to unfavourable ones, perpetuating the cycle of rebirth.

Some karmic acts bear fruit in the same life in which they are committed, others in the immediately succeeding one, and others in future lives that are more remote. This furnishes the basic context for the moral life.

Nirvana

The aim of buddhist practice is to be rid of the delusion of ego, and thus free oneself from the fetters of this mundane world. One who is successful in doing so is said to have overcome the round of rebirths and to have achieved enlightenment.
